The Longer I Stay Here, the Busier I Get
Maybe it’s because there is a lot going on at work, or maybe it’s because I’m going to school on top of it all, and the homework is piling up, but I feel like I’m running out of time to see it all, do it all, and eat it all.
So where did I leave off? Saturday we took the train to New Haven. I had never taken a real train before, and was excited to buy my ticket and walk through the gate that said “Track 26” in elegant letters, but was disappointed when I discovered that the train is nothing more than a subway car, just outside instead of below ground. It was a two hour ride to New Haven, and my flat mates and I bought a map and walked to Yale. Great old gothic buildings. There were two museums on the far side of the campus, and we tried to walk over there, but didn’t make it before they closed. So we grabbed a quick snack and boarded the train to go back to the city. We were exhausted, having walked all day, and crashed after pedicures.
Sunday I had homework to do–go to a list of Gap stores. I mapped it out, and tried to make it to all of them, but kept finding other stores to stop in. M & J Trimming, a lot of little jewelry wholesalers like Sam Moon, etc., kept waylaying me. I went into Bergdorf Goodman for the first time ever, and Bloomingdales, both of which were very different than I expected. Tired, I stopped at a little bistro called Morrell, and then grabbed a cupcake for dessert from Dean & Deluca next door, and headed home.
Yesterday, in class, we did excersizes on mapping and visualization. I won’t go into it here because I haven’t yet figured out how I’m supposed to apply it in real life. I think everyone in the class is starting to get exhausted, and we all voted to stay in class yesterday afternoon and do teamwork on our final projects.
Today we had an interesting discussion on how objects seek meaning, which ties into branding a great deal, and finally I felt like I had some really solid applicable material. I took two full pages of notes. I grabbed a sandwich at Cosi, and then we all met back up and headed to the Guggenheim, which was a treat for several reasons. First of all, it’s in a building by Frank Lloyd Wright. Secondly, the exhibit was on space, which interests me from an interior design perspective. Third and lastly, they have a huge collection of incredible impressionist art, one of which was a Van Gogh (I think he’s probably my favorite, by far).
I didn’t feel like taking the subway back to the res, so I started walking at 89th and 5th, slowly making my way down to 13th. Fifth Avenue, I discovered, is crowded with tourists, which Madision Avenue, only one block over, has a more refined assortment of shopping and isn’t nearly as packed. Hungry, I was disappointed that I didn’t pass another Dean & Deluca, but I did find a non-fat frozen yogurt place called Flurt, which was delicious. I’m still hungry, but I have a conference call at 7:00, so I may just eat left overs and see if I can drag the flatmates to Magnolia Bakery before they close.
