3 Steps to Deal with Self-Doubt
A few weeks ago I did an Instagram Q&A and one of the questions struck a cord. “What do you do when your self-doubt becomes debilitating?” Friend, that’s a hard one. Self-doubt is certainly something we all struggle with, but I’ve come up with a few steps that help me address it head-on.
I treat self-doubt like jumping headfirst into a hard workout. I use three steps to center myself. It’s a practice that gets easier with time like any workout.
Here are my three steps to deal with self-doubt!
Step 1
After recognizing I’m in a negative mental state, I “take captive every thought.” This involves acknowledging the negative thought or belief. Sometimes it’s like having a hard moment of truth with yourself.
Step 2
After acknolweding the thought, I make an active choice to think on only “true, good, and beautiful” things. I don’t care if it’s sunshine, butterflies, and unicores. The point is to get my brain to snap out of a downward spiral.
Step 3
I’ve pulled this step from a verse in Romans: “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” I repeat the first two steps over and over again: take captive the negative thoughts and replace them with truth, goodness and beauty. Gratitude helps too.
Again, this is a practice! It’s not always easy, but it gets easier over time. These steps are mental exercises that help you combat self-doubt. I’ll also add that I quit TV to finish the book and it has been INCREDIBLY uplighting to be reading in books about positivity, instead of watching the artificial drama play out on screen. I’m currently reading Joyful by Ingrid Fetell Lee. It is delightfully interesting! Here are three other inspirational reads I’ve recently picked up. Excited to dig into these too!
The Happiness Hack by Ellen Petry Leanse
The 2-Degree Difference by John Trent
The Architecture of Happiness by Alain De Botton
