Every room needs a touch of black–that’s Whitney English Design Philosophy 101. It anchors a room. The above has more than just a touch; the neutral tones seem grounded by the black wainscoat, the dark wine bottles, and the neutrally-framed chalkboard. I’m particularly fond of kitchen chalkboards, especially when they are in the reach of children. Nothing sparks the imagination like the opportunity for spontaneous creativity.

Love these small plates from John Derian. I think a collection of these would be so fun! You could pull out all these for halloween–the skull and cross bones could double as a preppy motif for non-seasonal decorating.
One of my favorite things to do this time of year is start scouting the next year’s desk calendars. Ilee has come out with an exquisite, luxurious little work of art in a desk calendar.
