HEART Goals Exercise: 1/5/10
Gain perspective while setting goals for the next year and beyond!
If you’ve been around here for a while, you may already know about my personal goal-setting system, HEART Goals. It’s a formula for setting balanced goals and a system for making decisions, prioritizing tasks, and taking action toward the vision you want for your life.
When I launched my new planner a few years ago, I started talking even more about this personal goal-setting system because the core of this system is built right into the Week on One Page planner. I wanted the two to work seamlessly together, which I wrote about here because I truly believe they can help you live a more balanced life. And if you want even more HEART Goals: I wrote a whole book about it—A More Beautiful Life. These systems and tools have given me perspective, focus, and confidence, and I know they can do the same for you!
Action Plan
To achieve your goals, you’re going to need an action plan. And to create an action plan, you need to know where you are now, where you want to go in the future, and the important milestones you’ll hit along the way. The way I create this action plan is through the 1/5/10 exercise.
The worksheet is a timeline for you to plan for the things that will inevitably happen in the next ten years. This work is pivotal in developing a vision for what you want your life to be like because it uncovers the less dynamic, real-world facts of life. I have three kids, and in the next ten years, we’ll need to be talking about college. In the next five years, we’re going to have to start thinking about having the car conversation before my oldest turns 16. That’s the real-life stuff my husband and I need to plan for!
This exercise is less about the idealistic and more about the concrete aspects of your life. It gives you the confidence to note the fixed points on your timeline, so it’s a lot easier to weave in the big dreams and audacious goals. It may seem simple, but this exercise is an eye-opener.
