Starter Style Shopping Checklist
We’ve been talking about Starter Style all month long. We’ve covered everything from what Starter Style is to the formula for Starter Style. Now it’s time for something really fun: a starter style shopping checklist.
I’m sharing four must-haves for a living room below, along with links to some of my favorite choices to help you get started shopping.
Starter Style Shopping Checklist: Living Room
Rugs:
A solid rug choice will help you set the foundation for your room. It’s going to help you tie everything together, and make your room seem more polished. If you have wood floors, it’s also going to help keep the room a little warmer and help with sound quality!
These are few of my favorite rugs:
Seating:
A good sofa is a big investment. Make sure you buy one you like, that will last. Keep in mind that your style may change over time, so you don’t want to buy something that’s only going to work in one decor scheme. Go for something high-quality and adaptable (and don’t forget who lives in your house when you choose your sofa)!
Sofas are often the main seating in a living room, but it’s nice to have a few other options for people to be able to spread out. I like a pair of upholstered chairs that are in a room to stay, as well as a few other more portable options around my house that I can move around as needed.
Some sofas & chairs I love:
Lamps:
Do not, I repeat, do not, rely on the overhead lighting to do all the work in your room. Overhead lighting is often harsh or it casts weird shadows. Sometimes it’s too bright, sometimes It doesn’t get in every corner. Lamps are the answer. With the right mix of lamps in your room, you can adjust the lighting as needed, while making a stylish statement with your choices. Sconces are another great option for mixing up the lighting situation.

Art & Accessories:
Don’t leave your walls blank! The right artwork and accessories are what really finishes off your room. Make sure to pay attention to scale and proportion when you are choosing artwork, and don’t over-accessorize. We’re not going for cluttered with accessories—every blank space doesn’t have to be filled. Choose thoughtful accessories that will add meaning, are functional, or are conversation pieces.
